The effect of bibliotherapy program on the depression, self-esteem, and emotion control ability in children from low-income families

Abstract
The purpose of the study was to examine the effect of a bibliotherapy program on the depression, self-esteem, and emotion control ability in the children from low-income families. For this study, 32 children showing symptoms of depression among 3rd through 5th grades were selected using TCRS and CDI, 16 children in an control group were placed in a waiting group. The researcher conducted the bibliotherapy program(21 sessions) for the experiment group from July 9, 2007 to Oct, 10, 2007. Before and after the program, children¡¯s depression, self-esteem levels and emotion control ability were tested in both groups by questionnaires. The qualitative data were collected through the each program sessions. Final participants for the analysis were 14 children in experiment group and 12 children in control group. The findings of the study are as follows: First, the bibliotherapy program was effective in decreasing the depression level in the children from low-income families. Second, the bibliotherapy program was effective in improving the self-esteem, and emotion control abilities in the children from low-income families. And also, the qualitative materials showed children¡¯s positive changes. This results suggest that the bibliotherapy program helps the children face their problems and be able to resolve them by themselves.
